What are the Prerequisites for entry?

You may enter this qualification if:

• you hold or can provide evidence in the majority of the competency units required for the Diploma of Management (BSB51107)
• you have substantial vocational experience in management but without formal qualification.

Diploma of Management requires a sound theoretical knowledge base and managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate own work and/or the work of a team.

 

How will you be assessed?

You will be required to complete evidence for each of the units in the program. The evidence is a combination of assignments, workplace application, knowledge questions and activities.

There is additional reading to complete for the program and questions are asked based on this reading material that will be provided to you.

Recognition of Prior Learning services are also available for those who have the necessary skills and knowledge.

Course outline – 8 days

Module 1 BSBMGT605B Provide leadership across the organisation

(Core)

  • Set program objectives and identify key outcomes
  • Determine what level 5 leadership style implies and what competencies are displayed as a level 5 leader
  • Use the DISC profiling process to recognize different behavioural styles
  • Learn to adapt your own style in a range of situations
  • Review two key communication tools - Transactional Analysis and CASE
  • Utilise and gain experience in applying these models for holding tough conversations to improve team effectiveness and to manage performance
  • Understand leadership in your own organizational context and do a gap analysis – where do you currently stand and what areas require further development

Module 2 BSBMGT616A Develop and implement strategic plans

(Core)

  • Review the teachings of Jim Collins and understand what differentiates good companies from great companies
  • Start the process of creating a strategic plan following the ‘hedgehog’ concept
  • Develop the plan to include the organizational goals and guiding principles
  • Create a communication strategy to send appropriate messages through the business
  • Learn how to think systemically and to understand the impact of one action on the system – learn what Peter Senge considers to be the ‘learning organisation’
  • Review and understand Gary Hamel’s view of strategy and how this could be implemented in your organization

Module 3 BSBINN601A Manage organisational change

(Core)

  • Develop an understanding of leading change ‘guru’ John Kotter’s 8 steps of change
  • Determine which ‘iceberg’s in your organisation are melting and create a strategy to shift people, processes or systems to another ‘iceberg’
  • Understand the human and behavioural side of change and adopt strategies to develop resilience to change in the organisation
  • Develop a change process that is practical and applicable to your organisation

Module 4 BSBFIM601A Manage finances

(Elective)

  • Review the areas of financial performance management including setting budgets, forecasting and reporting.
  • Review financial data and statutory compliance requirements
  • Set budgets in line with organisational and statutory requirements
  • Implement budgets and review Profit and Loss, Cash Flows and ageing reports
  • Set out and interpret financial reports
  • Understand the language of financial management as well as of statutory compliance requirements
  • Begin the assessment tasks including preparation and review of budgets, interpretation of written reports and compliance with taxation requirements.

Module 5 BSBRSK501A Manage risk

(Elective)

  • Review the areas of performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage risk across an organisation
  • Establish the when, where , what and how of risk including current situation and future developments
  • Identify and establish the background to specific risks
  • Assess the likelihood of risks occurring and the consequences of this happening
  • Determine the best way of treating these risks by implementing and evaluation and an action plan.
  • Prepare for assessment including preparation of a risk management plan for a workplace, identification, documentation and an action plan for management

Module 6 BSBMKG609A: Develop a marketing plan

(Elective)

  • Understand the basic requirements for the preparation and writing of a marketing plan.
  • Learn how to assess opportunities and development of strategies to use them to generate business
  • Assess the effectiveness of a marketing strategy
  • Create and implement the scheduling, costing, accountabilities and people needed to implement a particular strategy
  • Develop a marking plan that includes the particular approach used by the organisation as well as the mix of strategies etc that will be implemented
  • Prepare for the main focus of the assessment task - preparation of a marketing plan using the resources available within the participant’s organisation. This would include the techniques used in developing the strategies, presentation to stakeholders, management of questioning and discussion of the plan as its adoption by the stakeholders.

Module 6/7 BSBSUS501A: Develop workplace policy and procedures for sustainability

(Elective)

  • Understand the requirements for creating and implementing a workplace sustainability policy. Review relevant industry specific situations as well as OH&S guidelines
  • Develop a sustainability policy that is relevant to the organization
  • Promote the policy and educate the workforce about its implementation
  • Develop procedures to assist with implementation and continuous improvement of the policy
  • Establish a process for assessment and review of the policy
  • Prepare to complete the assessment tasks include preparing a draft policy for the workplace as well as evaluation of how effective the education of all stakeholders has been in ensuring the policy’s effectiveness in the workplace.

Module 7/8 BSBMGT608B Manage innovation and continuous improvement

(Elective)

  • Review the key criteria that innovative organisations meet – look at case studies that reflect on innovative best practice
  • Put into practice a range of problem solving techniques that are used consistently in meetings and workshops in your organisation to promote creativity and ‘out of the box’ thinking
  • Follow the techniques of Eduard de Bono and learn how to see challenges from different perspectives
  • Adopt the techniques of creative problem solving and understand how to put these into practice by resolving a current challenge facing your team
  • Establish a practical action plan to develop an innovative culture that seeks continuous improvement

Module 7/8 BSBMGT617A Develop and implement a business plan

(Elective)

  • Using all the information from previous sessions capture strategies into a formal business plan
  • Follow the organisational template or review other templates that could be suitable
  • Work in a hands-on way to create the business plan and ensure that the plan has key measures and outcomes that are readily understood
  • Review key performance and benchmarking frameworks to enhance your business plan – the Business Excellence model and Investors in People
  • Sum up program learnings and agree commitments for the way forward

All sessions combine a range of different methodologies to allow you to gain insight into the way in which you communicate and to learn from others in the group.
