Course Overview

A well structured, learner-centred program ensures that learning is embedded into the long-term memory of participants. Learn new techniques to ensure that all learning styles are catered for and that your learning programs include openers and closers that relate to the content. Review a range of models for instructional design and then apply these in a practical way to your own subject matter content. Learn the latest and most innovative ways of setting up work-books, slides and assessment activities that all lead towards delivering a program that is successful and drives changes in behavior, skills and attitude.

All too often we encounter learners who become frustrated by content that appears illogical or unclear or where there is a lack of visuals or few linkages in the session. Ensure that your programs meet learner expectations and follow key design principles to ensure that learning ‘sticks’!

Course Objective

Participants learn in a range of different ways and engage their whole brain in acquiring new skills and in reaching higher performance levels. Ensure that your programs are ‘whole brained’ and meet the diverse thinking and learning styles of all participants to create an experience that leads them to awareness that is then backed up by theory.

Course Outcomes

  • Review learning styles and how these relate to whole brain thinking and to all the mental processes of the brain
  • Understand the theory behind strong models of instructional design including ADDIE, DEDICT and 4MAT
  • Conduct needs analysis by asking the right questions in interviews and focus groups so that learning is correctly targeted
  • Learn to differentiate between ‘need to know’ and ‘useful to know’ information in the context of the training need
  • Chunk content into 8 – 20 minute bite sizes to enable learners to engage fully during the session
  • Create and integrate a range of learning transfer strategies to ensure that your program is participant-centred:
    • Identify strong and relevant openers and closers for each 8 or 20 minute segment
    • View the full extent of exciting learning tools including working in groups, in pairs as well as self-reflection and out-of-the room work
    • Integrate suitable video content, games, and activities to raise the level of curiosity and to ensure learner motivation
    • Devise appropriate written and verbal exercises to encourage learning that embeds into long-term memory so that learners will not only hear the information – they remember and use it
  • Structure role-plays, case studies and simulations so that they are well briefed and de-briefed
  • Develop Powerpoint slides, hand-outs and manuals that are in line with the latest guidelines on visual learning and content design
  • Spend time reviewing your own current program content to make changes and improvements and ensure that your design reaches standards for excellence
  • Measure the effectiveness of your design techniques in shifting participants towards changes in their attitude and behaviour
